- Why does buskit go to Belarus
On the 25th April 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster ripped through a power plant 80 miles away north of Kiev in Belarus. As a result of this massive disaster, 30 people were killed instantly and 135,000 people had to be evacuated from neighbouring towns and villages. This disaster not only affected people living in and around the area at the time of the incident, it also affected unborn children and continues to affect the lives of children today. Our charity aims to help the victims of this disaster mainly children by taking over aid and bringing a little happiness to their unfortunate lives. Back to top
- What do the buskiteers do while in Belarus
To date, Buskit's projects have included painting hospital wards with murals and cartoons so the children will not feel as scared and daunted when they come in, refurbishing the hostel owned by Buskit's sister charity, refurbishing the kitchen facilities in the Oncology Hospital and building three play parks. While in Belarus we entertain at various hospitals and centres and this year (2006) we held workshops in music, dance, art and sports, all of which were very successful Back to top
- What aid is taken over to Belarus
Each year Buskit fills a lorry full of humanitarian aid which is driven over to Belarus by two members of the charity. This lorry is packed with food, children's clothes and toys, toiletries and cleaning products all of which (except the food) we have been collecting over the year. Once in Belarus, the lorry is unloaded at the Children In Trouble's (Buskit's sister charity) warehouse and from there it is evenly distributed amoungst the needy Back to top
- So why does the charity go back year after year
Although the Chernobyl disaster took place 20 years ago, the effects and devastation of it are on going and will be for hundreds of years. Many children have cancer and their parents either stay by their bedsides resulting in no income for the family, or they are at work and cannot spend much time with their sick child. This is why Buskit's input is vital. We take over aid to help the poor families, but also help boost the children's morale by entertaining them, playing with them and brightening up their dull corridors, this turns their sad painful faces into faces full of smiles and thanks Back to top
